DIVING

Scuba Diving at the Mombasa Marine Park is arranged on a daily basis. There is a weekly departure schedule available at the dive center. Once you arrive at the Marine Park, you will be taken by boat to the dive site which is approximately 25 minutes away.
The dive departure times are planned in accordance with the tides, which enables flexibility for divers to dive during different times of the day. There is no fixed schedule on early morning departures. This gives the keen underwater photographer options for best light conditions.

MARINE CONSERVATION

East Africa boasts the Second Longest Barrier Reef in the world, stretching from the coast of Somalia along Kenya to southern Tanzania. It provides a food source and shelter to a vast array of marine life including the majestic Whale Shark and Manta ray.
Kenya embraces marine conservation and there is a lot of attention given to protect Marine Reserves in Kenya. This is so that tropical fish life can be observed at leisure on the unspoiled reef. For the recreational diving industry, environmental friendly moorings have been installed to avoid damage to corals by anchors.

Serena Beach Hotel is the only Beach hotel that has set up protected hatching sites for sea turtle eggs, where guests can participate in helping a baby turtle into the sea. Sadly, Sea turtles are on the endangered species list.

SAILING-SURFING-KAYAKING

Watersports centers are available providing modern windsurfing rigs from Hefley, with beginner, intermediate and professional boards, a 17 foot LION Catamaran, 2 Hobiecats (14 and 16 Feet), a Laser and 4 Kayaks.
The larger catamarans are hired out only with a helmsman.

Windsurfing and Sailing courses can be arranged on a daily basis.

There is also a Kite surfing Center nearby for interested individuals.

Use of the equipment is FREE of charge for guests of the Mombasa Serena Beach Hotel.

WHALE SHARKS (Rhincodon typus)

Are you looking for a whale shark encounter? The Kenyan coast is among the world’s best locations for whale shark encounters. These slow-moving filter feeding sharks are the largest extant fish species that roam the world’s sub-tropical oceans generally in a range between +-30 latitude, in search of plankton rich waters. Although Pelagic feeding occurs near the coast and reefs. The whale shark can reach lengths of up to 12 meters and weigh 40,000 lbs, although the average length of an adult whale shark is estimated at 9 meters.

September – October and January – February is a good time for whale shark sightings in Kenya. These animals can easily be spotted by boat – our captains slowly approach the whale shark and then stop the boat nearby. Under the watchful eye of our whale experts, divers may enter the water with a mask and fins and fulfill every diver’s dream, of swimming with the largest fish in the ocean in its natural habitat. The Kenyan coast supports an East African Whale Shark Trust who are committed to whale shark research and conservation. Whale sharks are fitted with satellite receiver tags for research purposes in an annual tagging exercise along the Kenyan coast.

GLASS BOTTOM BOAT

Snorkeling excursions are organized on a daily basis with a 25 seater Glass-Bottom boat leaving from the Coral Garden for 2 hours everyday. The boat is equipped with life jackets and communication with the office on shore. Snorkeling equipment and life jackets are provided. Marine life can be viewed through 2 large “toughened” glass panels fitted in the hull for those who do not want to snorkel
